Future Watch: Zach Hyman Rookie Hockey Cards, LeafsFuture Watch: Zach Hyman Rookie Hockey Cards, Leafs – Every young star must have a veteran to guide them through their first campaign. So much has been said about the rookie season Auston Matthews has put together. Few give credit to his linemates and one of those players who’s been instrumental in his development is left winger, Zach Hyman.

Hyman was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2015. It happened before the NHL Draft. The Florida Panthers had drafted him but couldn’t sign him. The Leafs had a chance to sign and keep him and did just that. When they did, little did they know the impact he’d have on their team’s best player down the road.

The gifted winger played in four seasons for the University of Michigan. During his time there he was a Hobey Baker Finalist, recognized as one of the best players in college hockey. He didn’t win that award but he did manage to pot 22 goals and 54 points as a senior and that got him noticed.

He had a terrific rookie season with the Toronto Marlies in 2015-16. Hyman had 15 goals and 22 assists. His team made the playoffs and he added six points in 15 postseason games.

Zach Hyman has officially licensed NHL rookie cards in 2016-17 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey and Parkhurst.

Here’s a look at Hyman working around the net:

At 6′-1″, 210lbs, he’s the perfect complement to Matthews. Last season he played in 16 games with the Leafs getting four goals and six points. That was pre-Matthews. This season he scored five goals and 12 points in his first 33 games. If he continues to be teamed with a potential Calder Trophy finalist, he should end up with 10-15 goals this season. Remember, Hyman is only 24 himself so he can continue to get better as he gets more professional games under his belt.
