Hobby Musings: Super Break getting presidential with Pieces of the Past – Celebrating some of the greatest figures in our nation’s history, Super Break recently released their Pieces of the Past Series 1 product. Highlighting presidents and their spouses, the product also includes base cards of notable current political candidates. Each box includes a base card and three relic cards, while a 10-box case offers some additional hits at that level.

In the case provided by Super Break for review, I pulled two 1/1 relic cards. The coolest, at least for me, was a Martin Van Buren jumbo relic. The card actually featured two relics with a vintage matchbook and a stamp. My other 1/1 featured a relic from Calvin Coolidge.

Besides the 1/1’s, my case also yielded two multi-relic cards. One was a dual piece featuring President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania. The other was a triple relic that featured items from Martha Washington, Mary Todd Lincoln and Jacqueline Kennedy. Overall, the variety of the relics was pretty cool and had me examining each one carefully. I was very intrigued by the Zachary Taylor card relic that appeared to have a piece of presidential stamp/seal on it.

Some of the relic pieces included written or typed dates on them, and I couldn’t help but be fascinated, especially with the older items. The card stock is nice and not your typical paper or glossy. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about with it was that I felt it made it hard to read some of the words on the card back and see the full item the relic piece was sourced from.

I’m not a presidential collector, but having a glimpse, even a tiny one, at these pieces of history was pretty cool. They’re also not the kinds of cards you’ll get in a lot of products today. Whether you’re into political memorabilia or are just a history buff, I think you can have some fun with them. They do serve as cool items to share some history with younger collectors. For more on the product and what went into it, I had the chance to catch up with Super Break’s Scott Allen.

KS: Scott, what inspired you to create this Pieces of the Past line?

SA: We wanted to start off 2020 with our finest Pieces work yet celebrating the accomplishments of the greats from the past while providing education to our youth.

KS: Where did you get all of the relic pieces/autographs relics?

SA: We love to buy and source PSA, BAS and JSA documents from dealers, collectors and auctions.

KS: Overall, what are the highlights collectors should be looking for in these?

SA: Well, #1, you can complete the master set of base and Pieces, and if you’re the first to submit your accomplishment we will send you a signed Thomas Jefferson Certified 1/1 The Bar Cut Auto. We can’t wait to see who is the first. The dual and triple Pieces relic cards are super limited and very cool. The SuperFoil 1/1s of each president should be big, like the gold Washington on the sales sheet. Lots of gold and silver, as well as vintage gold and silver coins, 2020 candidates, every president, president and first lady duals and cut autographs. We averaged one to two 1/1s per case, one to two duals or triples, as well as other inserts. The ROI is the highest we have produced for a Pieces of the Past production.

KS: We are notably in an election year. Do you find that demand for presidential/political memorabilia differs in an election year vs. a non-election year?

SA: We are selling through this release faster than any other. An election year does bring a set like this into the forefront of non-sports collecting. We feel our collector base knows that we like to over deliver.

KS: We are going through strange and difficult times during this coronavirus pandemic. How has it affected your business and operations?

SA: Each release, sports and non-sports, we have shipped in 2020 is sold out. We believe collectors find the value and deliverables in our product lines of Super Break, The Bar and Pieces of the Past. This makes our hard work worth while as our mission is to have impressive releases to our collector base. Thank you to all of those who support us each month and we hope you and your families are staying safe. Family is everything, keep them healthy and safe.

KS: This has been advertised as Series 1 of this. When can we expect Series 2 to come out?

SA: Series 2 will launch in the fall. We will insert new bells and whistles into Series 2 to complement the first series in a higher quality!
