In the Clinch: Streaking Rafael Fiziev vs. Former Champ Rafael dos Anjos, UFC Vegas 58 – And so, at long last, UFC Vegas 58 will feature the battle of the Rafaels.

In the Clinch: Streaking Rafael Fiziev vs. Former Champ Rafael dos Anjos, UFC Vegas 58In the Clinch: Streaking Rafael Fiziev vs. Former Champ Rafael dos Anjos, UFC Vegas 58We have the former lightweight champion and current No. 7 in dos Anjos (31-13-0), 37, who has looked solid in his last two victories, both decisions. In this current rash of UFC retirements, dos Anjos is still looking for one more run to the lightweight title but finds himself fending off a rising prospect in an impatient division full of new blood.

Dos Anjos has said in interviews that he plans to pressure Fiziev, add some takedowns and generally make him uncomfortable throughout five rounds. He does hold the experience advantage and knows what it takes over 25 minutes. No one would dare question RDA and his ability to shut down the competition. Just ask Paul Felder.

Fiziev (11-1-0), 29, as the No. 10, collected two impressive finishes in his last three bouts. He knocked out the dangerous ground fighter in Renato Moicano, and wheel-kicked Brad Riddell, both of which bagged performance bonuses. Add in two Fight of the Night bonuses and “Ataman” has collected $200K in his last four fights. But now, he must factor in a possible five round war, his first of his career, with a former champion.

Cardio is a bit of factor in this contest. The longer the fight goes, the more advantage goes to RDA to figure out a way to get the decision. If Fiziev can break through RDA’s pressure and hurt him early, then the momentum swings. RDA has never been good coming from behind. The onus will be on Fiziev to bring the fight.

Another old lion vs. young lion battle. Sean Shelby, keep ’em coming.
