Klein’s Korner: Bringing A Younger Audience To The Hobby

Klein's Korner: Bringing A Younger Audience To The HobbyLast column I alluded to a new addition to our home. Now, yes raising a child for however long is a challenge but also very rewarding. At least he’s a boy and loves sports and has, so far, loved cards. But this is where I need assistance from all of you. How would you encourage a love of the hobby in someone so young?

I will state I’m very fortunate that if he ever comes up to my office, I have some extra cards from all the wonderful donations we’ve received in the past year. I can pretty much guarantee you I could give him one of the myriad 3,200 ct. boxes in my office and the Adat Chaverim Brotherhood would still have enough cards for the next three years or so. That is presuming we do not receive one card. This photo is of my office the day I moved in 200,000 cards the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2017.

Yes a pretty impressive day for my cardio system.  As I mentioned he so far has shown he knows who Dez Bryant and Ezekiel Elliott are and has worn a Dez jersey to school. He did like the Red Sox when we watched a game. Hopefully I can guide him back to rooting for the Yankees instead of that New England evil empire.Klein's Korner: Bringing A Younger Audience To The Hobby

I’m not really worried about gifting him with too many more things right now. I know he loved seeing a Dallas Cowboys mini-helmet at the Sports Memorabilia store in the mall. That is an easy holiday gift which is well within budget. My real concern will be if and when he’s ready to start collecting at about age 7. What is the best way to assist him? Since this is all new to me, I’d love to hear from you all on your ideas about kids and collecting.

This is all new to me because I’ve spent the past several years writing about the past and saying things which are theoretical. Now this is real life and I’m living a very different life. I’ve gone from playing with cards almost every single night to rarely even touching a card.  It’s quite a difference and my man cave is, well, now a bedroom.  We’ll go back to normal columns again soon but this one needed to be written. I know my fellow GTS columnist also has a young one in his family and I’d like to hear what he to say on the subject as well.
