MLB Future Watch: Akil Baddoo Baseball Cards, Detroit Tigers – Akil Baddoo was drafted by the Minnesota Twins with the 74th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft. This powerful outfielder has pop that teams are always looking for.
In 2017, he played Rookie Ball in the Gulf Coast League. In 200 at-bats, Baddoo had 19 doubles, 5 triples, 4 home runs, and 29 RBI with a .323 batting average.
Baddoo joined the Cedar Rapids Kernels in A-ball in 2018. In 437 at-bats, Baddoo hit 22 doubles, 11 triples, 11 home runs, and 40 RBI with 24 steals. Once again, this prospect had a big year that moved him up the ladder.
2020 was a lost year for Baddoo, as it was for many minor league players. He also switched alliances when the Tigers drafted him in the Rule 5 draft. He had a new organization and another chance to get to the big leagues.
Baddoo had a tough year in 2021. He was assigned to Toledo in AAA but had a concussion and only managed to play in four games. It was a setback, but he didn’t give up on his dream. The Tigers still had him on the 40-man roster showing what his worth is to the franchise. He made the Tigers out of Spring Training and got 50 at-bats before being sent down to AAA again. He did hit his first major league home run but otherwise struggled at the plate.
Baddoo has had a non-Covid illness since being sent down to Toledo and has only played a few games in 2022. If he starts to hit like he should, he will get called up again. The Tigers are desperate for his tools, but bad luck and missing development time have set the 23-year-old back. Fans love this player so expect to see him back in 2022.
Cards Worth Chasing
A great card to get is Baddoo’s 2021 Bowman’s Best Rookie. It has a sharp looking autograph, and the photo gives a great sense of his speed.
His 2021 Topps Allen and Ginter Rookie Card has a classic old school design. Since the Tigers are one of the oldest franchises in the game, it’s a fun card to collect.
One more card to look for is his 2021 Topps Update Rookie. The photo shows him being mobbed by his teammates. Was it after his big home run or something else? Either way, look out for this guy who has the tools.
