MLB Future Watch: Brendan Donovan Baseball Cards, St. Louis Cardinals – Brendan Donovan was born in Wurzburg, Germany. The St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 7th round of the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft. He’s a talented infielder who has a chance to catch on at the big-league level.
Donovan was raised in Enterprise, Alabama. He played ball at Enterprise High School. As a senior, he hit .467 with 4 home runs and 44 RBI with 17 doubles. That got the notice of the University of South Alabama.
Before college ball, he played summer baseball for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the Cape Cod League.
Then in 2018, as a junior, he hit .302 with 5 home runs and 55 RBI over 57 games. After that season the Cardinals took him in the draft. He was ready to start his minor league career.
In 2019, Donovan played in A-ball and then AAA. He hit 27 doubles, 3 triples, and 8 home runs with 53 RBI and 4 steals with a .380 on-base percentage. That was big progress.
In 2020, the pandemic was a lost year for him.
In 2021, he started out in AA playing for the Springfield Cardinals and then finished the season with the Memphis Redbirds in AAA once again. Donovan hit 21 doubles, 1 triple, 12 home runs, and 66 RBI with 19 stolen bases.
2022 was his breakout season. He started in AAA once again and was hitting .298 after 16 games. Then he got the call from the Cardinals, and he never looked back. In 126 games, Donovan hit 21 doubles, 1 triple, and 5 home runs with 45 RBI and a .281 batting average.
In the spring of 2023, Donovan was hitting for more power in spring training. If that continues, he might become a big name at the age of 26! Based on missing a year in the pandemic, this utility guy is going to be one to watch.
