MLB Future Watch: Pedro Leon Baseball Cards, Houston Astros – Pedro Leon was signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent in January of 2021. He began as an outfield prospect, but that seemed to change over time. He’s playing a few more positions just in case. The talent is there, and that’s what matters.
From 2017-19, he played for the Cuban National team. In his last season there, Leon hit 15 home runs with 36 RBI and seven steals with a crazy good .467 on-base percentage. He scored 33 runs in 35 games.
The pandemic wasn’t great for Leon. It was a lost season for the young Cuban player.
In 2021, Leon played in three levels. He ended the season in AAA with the Sugar Land Skeeters. Combined, he hit 9 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs with 36 RBI and 18 steals with a .333 on-base percentage. This was a great year of development for him, but development can’t be rushed.
In 2022, he was back in Sugar Land. He hit 27 doubles, 3 triples, 17 home runs and 63 RBI. Leon stole 38 bases, and he had a .365 on-base percentage. That season, he played center field, right field, and shortstop. The thought was that the versatility would help him get to the big leagues.
In the offseason, he had sports hernia surgery. He was ready for Spring Training, but the Astros rolled him out slowly. Chances are he will begin 2023 in AAA once again. At 24, there’s no rush and the Astros are a great team. They can afford to be patient. In Spring Training in addition to his bat, Leon has been making diving catches in center field and showing off his accurate, strong throwing arm. The Astros and their fans can’t wait to see this must collect prospect.
