MLB Future Watch: William Contreras Baseball Cards, Atlanta BravesMLB Future Watch: William Contreras Baseball Cards, Atlanta BravesWilliam Contreras was signed by the Atlanta Braves as an international free agent in 2015. This Venezuelan catcher started his minor league journey at the age of 18. There have been a lot of expectations placed on him, and so far, he’s been delivering, proving to be a young champion.

In 2018, Contreras was still in A-ball, and he hit a combined 24 doubles, 11 home runs with 49 RBI, and a .285 batting average.

Contreras started the 2019 season in the Florida State League and ended up in AA with the Mississippi Braves. He hit 20 doubles, six home runs with 39 RBI. His fielding percentage rose to .983 and he was throwing out 33% of baserunners. He made a big jump defensively.

2020 was a tough year for him as he spent his baseball time at the alternate training site. At least that kept the catching prospect playing through the pandemic and he got to play in 10 major league games with the Braves.

In 2021, Contreras played in AAA for the Gwinnett Gladiators and the Braves. With Gwinnett, the prospect hit nine home runs while driving in 29 and hitting .290. He got in 52 games in Atlanta smacking eight homers and knocking in 23. He threw out 37% of would-be base stealers which is excellent for a rookie backstop.

Contreras did get one at-bat during the Braves postseason run that led to a World Championship. When a young player can get that kind of experience it can serve as a jumpstart to the next season. He has a compact power swing with a slight leg kick. His eyes are always focused on the barrel of the bat and his power seems to be improving as he gains more man strength. This guy works out hard and next year he should get a significant playing time.

The first card to target is Contreras’s  2021 Topps Chrome Rookie Card. It has a landscape view, and he looks like he’s running after making contact in his Braves uniform.

His 2021 Topps Gypsy Queen Rookie shows him in his shades with his red chest gear. I would say the ball is in his glove as well while he’s standing up.

His 2021 Topps Fire Rookie Card shows him ready to hit. You can see his focus as he tries to figure out what the opposing pitcher is going to throw.
