MLB Future Watch: Yermin Mercedes Baseball Cards, Chicago White Sox – Yermin Mercedes was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 2017 Rule 5 Minor League Draft. The highly touted catcher has power and raw ability. However, sometimes catchers need time before they’re ready to catch every other day in the big leagues.
In 2017, this barrel-chested catcher played for two teams, ending his season in AA with the Bowie Baysox. He slugged 20 doubles, 16 home runs with 62 RBI, and a .276 batting average. He was with the Orioles at the time, then signed as a free agent after a stint with the Washington Nationals.
In 2018, the White Sox placed him with Winston-Salem in A+ ball. It was a good year for the backstop. Mercedes hit 24 doubles, 1 triple, 14 home runs, and 64 RBI with a .289 batting average.
Mercedes played with two more teams in 2019, getting as high as AAA with the Charlotte Knights. His combined numbers included 19 doubles, 23 home runs, and 80 RBI with a .317 batting average.
During the 2020 season, Mercedes was on the White Sox Alternate Training Site and got only one big-league at-bat.
In 2021, he split time between Charlotte and the White Sox. With Chicago, he slugged 9 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs with 37 RBI in 68 games. He got into it with the manager, Tony LaRussa, when he swung through a take sign. He hit a 47 MPH pitch over the fence with a position player pitching in the ninth inning of the blowout win. LaRussa let his player know in the press, and Mercedes thought about quitting after he was demoted to AAA.
During spring training in 2022, Mercedes suffered a broken hamate bone that required surgery. He then went to Charlotte to rehab, where he is patiently waiting for his call. Something tells me the White Sox will call him up based on how well he hit the last time.
Cards Worth Chasing
The first card to get is Mercedes’s 2021 Bowman’s Best Rookie Card. This is a great card showing him in a mid-80s White Sox throwback jersey. Love it.
His 2021 Topps Stadium Club Rookie Card shows the “Yerminator” sliding into home plate. It’s a tremendous action shot of him, and his autograph has a flair to it.
One last card is his 2021 Topps Gypsy Queen Rookie Card. The looks to be admiring a home run he just hit. He will hit some more in the big leagues very soon.
