NBA Decades Fantasy Draft: The 2000s – With the 2020 NBA Draft approaching, Go GTS takes a look back at the history of the NBA with a fantasy decades draft. Over the next five weeks, four of our scribes will pick one player from each of the 1970s, 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s. By Draft’s end, each will have an all-time starting five to be envied.

In Week Four, our dope writers picked the players who owned the court in the 2000s. This decade saw the NBA move the Vancouver Grizzlies to Memphis and revive roundball in Charlotte with the founding of the Bobcats, who later became the Hornets. Now follow this bouncing ball –  the former team that occupied the city – the original Charlotte Hornets, had left for New Orleans following the 2001-02 season. Damage to the city from Hurricane Katrina, however, in 2005, meant the team moved to Oklahoma City for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons before returning and ultimately becoming the Pelicans. Oklahoma, meanwhile, soon got the Seattle Supersonics.

While the 90s belonged to the Chicago Bulls, the 00s were almost outright owned by the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. L.A. won four championships and appeared in two additional finals, while S.A. won three titles. The only other teams to take home the gold were the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics.

James Gale Selects: Chris Paul
The type of player you root against unless he’s on your team. Great passer and defender. Clutch shooter. Vocal leader, very cerebral. Rumored to not shower before games so defenders give him a little extra space.

Russ Cohen Selects: Stephen Curry
Steph Curry is already one of the greatest point guards of all-time. He’s won two MVP’s (2015 and 2016) and three championships in ’15, ’17, and ’18. He uses the three-point shot as a weapon and may be the best shooter in the game.

Rich Klein Selects: Kevin Durant
A tall man with both skills inside and outside has proved to be near impossible to guard by any opponent. He may be the best outside shooting big man of the 21st Century,

Jon Waldman Selects: LeBron James
It’s getting harder not to call James the GOAT. Four MVP honors, four NBA Championships, scoring champ, assists leader, 16 All-NBA recognitions and five all-defence nods. Oh, and he’s c.4,000 points from taking the all-time scoring crown.
