NBA Future Watch: Anthony Edwards Basketball Cards, Minnesota TimberwolvesNBA Future Watch: Anthony Edwards Basketball Cards, Minnesota Timberwolves – Anthony Edwards has racked up several tremendous accolades in his life. Helping the Minnesota Timberwolves stop being a chronically underachieving franchise after several decades is chief among them.

Initially one of the top Pop Warner running backs in the country, Edwards switched his focus to basketball in his youth. Edwards developed strongly on the Atlanta Xpress AAU team and on the Holy Spirit Preparatory School squad in high school – which he led to a state championship and runner-up finish in his junior and senior seasons. A stat line of 29 PPG, nine RPG and two APG helped Edwards to qualify as a five-star recruit, as did appearances in the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic. Pursued by multiple decorated programs, Edwards chose to become the highest-rated player to attend Georgia in the modern recruiting age. Thus, availing himself of the guidance of Tom Crean, who coached two of his favorite players, Dwyane Wade and Victor Oladipo.

It didn’t take long for Edwards to start flashing echoes of his heroes. Thanksgiving week of his freshman season of 2019, he put up 37 points, six rebounds, four steals and three blocks against third-ranked Michigan State at the Maui Invitational. This was the highest-scoring effort for a Bulldog freshman since Jacky Dorsey posted 41 against LSU in 1975!

Edwards had many more memorable games en route to attaining 19.1 PPG and 5.2 RPG and becoming a finalist for the Jerry West Award as top collegiate shooting guard in the country. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the end of his season, but Edwards carried the momentum over to the delayed NBA Draft in November, landing with the top pick in Minnesota.

NBA Future Watch: Anthony Edwards Basketball Cards, Minnesota TimberwolvesComing into the NBA as an incredibly athletic specimen with good scoring skills and the potential to check every other box on the court, Edwards was considered a work in progress behind the three-point line, tallying .294 at Georgia. That area has seen improvement every season in the Association, from .329 to .357 to .369.

Edwards punctuated a rookie campaign that placed him as runner-up for Rookie of the Year. He was the third-youngest player in NBA history to exceed 40 points in a game on March 18, 2021. Before the end of the calendar year, Edwards would become the seventh player in league history to amass 2,000 points in his first 100 games at age 20 or younger. He also became the fourth active player with 2,000 points, 400 rebounds and 300 assists in his first 100 games. But the all-around skills shown have been overshadowed by the credentials as a winner, helping Minnesota to the playoffs in 2022 and a rugged effort against Memphis. As Edwards grows alongside Towns, helping take the Wolves where they’ve never gone before will allow him to carve a glimmering profile in the NBA.
