Thomas, born in Japan, was living in Virginia during his high school years. He transferred to Oak Hill Academy for his last two seasons – during which  he increased his PPG from 26.2 to 31.5, his RPG from 3.8 to 6.0, and maintained his APG at 3.4 both seasons. By the time he was done at Oak Hill, Thomas had surpassed the likes of Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony to become the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Awards began to flow Thomas’s way as his development into a relentless scoring machine at shooting guard materialized, most notably Offensive Player of the Year at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League and MVP of the Tournament of Champions. These designations coincided with Thomas’s status as a five-star prospect and a hotly contested recruiting process saw him end up at LSU.

A 27-point debut in Baton Rouge set the stage for Thomas to lead all freshmen in the country in scoring for the 2020-21 season at 23.0 PPG. In an era that has never prized shooting as much as right now – and with a dearth of players in every draft who are above-average at that skill – it was puzzling to see Thomas slide to Brooklyn at #27 in the 2021 NBA Draft based on questions about his defense. That said, Thomas ended up in a winning atmosphere right at the outset of his career. With an injury to Joe Harris, his opportunities have increased.  An 18-point outing on December 18 indicated that Thomas may become part of the answer for filling the scoring gap left behind by Kyrie Irving.

Thomas will earn additional opportunities on this championship contender by maximizing his defensive capabilities, tightening up his shot selection and improving his playmaking.  In the meantime, Thomas’s sweet-shooting capabilities seem destined to provide him the window to achieve stardom in the league’s largest market.
