NBA Future Watch: Kevin McCullar Basketball Cards, New York Knicks – Kevin McCullar has already recovered from a big threat to his career in the form of a broken tibia. A gritty defensive stopper who is working to improve his offensive game, McCullar has the determination that makes him a player you shouldn’t bet against.
Growing up in San Antonio, McCullar competed for Karen Wagner High School and led his team to the state championship game as a sophomore. Posting 16.8 PPG, 6.6 RPG and 3.8 APG as a junior, McCullar suffered that broken leg. Forgoing his senior season, McCullar, a four-star recruit, chose Texas Tech over Kansas State, Louisville, and Houston. The initial season would be a redshirt campaign to continue the rehabilitation.
Seeing his team reach the national championship game in his absence, McCullar was even more determined to experience such a moment when he came back. However, two seasons of playing time stretched very thin led McCullar to Kansas via the transfer portal.
As a senior, McCullar finally had the opportunity to put it all together. He did just that, in the form of 18.3 PPG, 6.0 APG, 4.1 APG, 1.5 SPG and .805 FT%. McCullar posted back-to-back triple doubles on November 14 and 20. That was the first time any player had that since the 2007-08 season. Additionally, those were only the third and fourth triple-doubles in program history.
Landing with New York in the 2024 NBA Draft, McCullar will start on a two-way contract. He’ll be working towards a future as a legit 3-and-D wing, requiring some work on the former to get there. With good floor vision, length, strength, and unselfishness, McCullar projects as the kind of player to help in a great variety of ways. He should be a big fan favorite eventually in New York.
McCullar’s cards and stickers have been on the market since 2022 and include many parallels and inserts. Bowman Chrome University, Best University, and Now University and Leaf OptiChrome and Vivid are the brands represented.
