NBA Future Watch: Kris Murray Basketball Cards, Prospect – Kris Murray was best known before this season for being the identical twin brother of one of the top rookies of the 2022 NBA Draft crop, Keegan Murray. But just like Keegan took a huge leap forward last year at Iowa, so too has Kris advanced greatly. He’s thrust himself into Top 10 consideration for this year’s draft.
Having played aside his brother his entire life until this breakout campaign, Kris played high school ball at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, IA. A senior season that yielded 19.5 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 2.1 APG, 2.5 BPG and 1.1 SPG led to first team All-Metro and second team All-State honors. Kris enrolled with Keegan for a postgraduate year at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, FL.
The sons of four-year Iowa starter Kenyon Murray, Kris and Keegan enrolled at Iowa in 2020. Kris was firmly in the background through his first two seasons, placing 12th on the team in FGA as a freshman and 4th as a sophomore. But nothing was going to be in Kris’s way for this junior season, which saw him placed on the watchlists for the Karl Malone Award and the John R. Wooden Award. Arguably the best power forward in the country in 2022-23, Kris has taken tremendous leaps forward. 20.5 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.0 SPG and 1.2 BPG. With .352 3%, the potential for scoring across the floor looms in the future as well.
Advanced stats have revealed Kris’s two-way impact for the Hawkeyes. The intangibles that are harder to measure point to him as a smart and savvy player. Continued improvement of the outside shot will probably determine the level of Kris’s NBA ceiling. Yet, the advancements already made by Kris in all facets of the game, point to the possibility that his brother’s pro career may just serve as a floor for what he can accomplish.
