NBA Future Watch: Ron Holland Basketball Cards, Detroit Pistons – Ron Holland is one of the best athletes in the 2024 NBA Draft class. A young man of eclectic interests, such as the music of Teddy Pendergrass, Holland possesses the kind of curious mind that will help him refine his skills at the game’s highest level.
Growing up in Duncanville, TX, Holland suited up for the local high school team as a freshman. He was very much in the background as they won the Texas Class 6A state championship. The team repeated that task Holland’s sophomore year, but this time he was integral, with 13.8 PPG and 10.1 RPG. The team three-peated the state title in Holland’s junior season. He moved even more to the forefront: 15.9 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 2.9 APG and 2.0 SPG. As a senior, Holland anchored a 29-1 team with 20.3 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 2.4 APG, 2.0 SPG and .544 FG%.
Holland’s consistent ascent resulted in five-star recruiting status and invitations to the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Game, the Nike Hoops Summit, the FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship and the FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup. Initially committed to Texas, Holland reconsidered in the aftermath of coach Chris Beard’s firing.
Turning his attention to the G League Ignite, Holland posted 18.5 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 3.0 APG, 2.3 SPG and 1.1 BPG. Getting off to a tough start from behind the arc, Holland didn’t get the chance to turn the situation around. He suffered a season-ending ruptured thumb tendon on January 31, 2024.
Landing with the Pistons with the fifth pick in the draft, Holland will need to burnish his shooting from distance and cut down on turnovers. That said, Holland should be one of the best defensive players in the league before very long. He flashes a wingspan that is almost 7-feet and boasts strong rebounding and secondary playmaking. If Holland can resume the level of improvement that he demonstrated all throughout his high school career, then he will be a big star in the NBA.
