NFL Future Watch: Brock Purdy Football Cards, San Francisco 49ers – Brock Purdy was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFL Draft. The title of “Mr. Irrelevant” fuels this quarterback. So far, he made his way to the NFC Championship game. So how did this happen?
Purdy started his football career at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona. This was a new program at his school in a tough conference, and he excelled. He led his team to a 27-13 record. Purdy was named Gatorade’s Football Player of the Year and was the Arizona Republic’s high school player of the year. He signed a letter of intent to Iowa State University as a highly regarded recruit.
His first season at Iowa State was a harbinger of things to come. In 2018, he started the season as the third-string quarterback, and by the season’s end, he was the starter. He had the sixth-best passer rating in NCAA football at 169.9, and the team was 7-2 with him as the starter.
In 2019, he started all 19 games. He threw 475 passes, a school record with a record number of yards, 3,982. Purdy had 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
In his 2020 junior season, Purdy threw for 2,750 yards and nine interceptions. He ran for five touchdowns as well. His completion percentage was 66.6%. Purdy was named to the Second-Team All-Big Ten as well.
In 2021, he played in all 13 games. He threw for 3,188 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions with one rushing touchdown. His 71.7 pass completion percentage was stellar. He was named to the First Team All-Big 12, and he was ready for the NFL Combine.
Purdy ran 4.84 in the 40-yard dash and a 27.0 vertical. Nothing stood out, and that could be one reason he was the last pick in the draft. Still, once you’re drafted, you’re in the same pond as the first rounders.
To start the 2022 season, Trey Lance was the starter, Jimmy Garoppolo was the #2, and Purdy was back to being a third stringer once again. Purdy got in a short time in October, but Garoppolo got hurt, and Purdy won the game. In the next game, he became the first NFL quarterback to beat Tom Brady in his first NFL game. Then he won a playoff game against the Cowboys, and the Eagles would be next.
While Purdy’s 1st season ended with an injury, he is still one to watch for years to come.
