After high school, he went straight to Indiana University. In 2018, he played in three games and completed 21 passes in 34 attempts for 219 yards and a touchdown. He added 45 yards rushing as well. A torn ACL ended his season prematurely.
In 2019, he completed 110 passes in 160 attempts for 1,394 yards and ten touchdowns against four interceptions. He rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns as well.
In 2020, he played six games, the same as the previous year. He had a 5-1 record. He completed 124 passes in 220 attempts and threw for 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns against four interceptions. Penix ran for 25 additional yards and two touchdowns. Penix tore the same ACL, ending his season once again.
In 2021, Penix played in just five games. This time, his numbers dropped. He had a 53.7 pass completion percentage and threw for 939 yards with four touchdowns against seven interceptions. He also added two rushing touchdowns. After that, he decided to enter the transfer portal and play for the Washington Huskies instead.
In 2022, he finally played in 12 games and the numbers were solid. He had a 65.3 completion percentage throwing for 4,641 yards and 31 touchdowns against eight interceptions. Penix added four rushing touchdowns too. He was the FBS leader in yards and an All-Pac 12, second-team nominee. Penix was named the AP Comeback Player of the Year.
In his final year of eligibility, Penix had an amazing season. He had a 65.4 completion percentage throwing for 4,903 yards, a career-high. Penix threw for 36 touchdowns against 11 receptions and added three rushing touchdowns. He won the Maxwell Award and was a First-Team All-American.
At the 2024 NFL Combine, he ran a 4.58 in the 40-yard dash. He had a laundry list of injuries and that may be why he dropped to eighth overall. With Kirk Cousins on the team, he has to wait his turn.
