Gardner attended Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, Michigan. He was a wide receiver and a cornerback. In a big Division 3 State Championship game, Gardner caught four passes for 126 yards with two touchdowns. Associated Press named him a First-Team All-State defensive back. At the time, he was the 163rd-ranked corner in the country. He committed to the University of Cincinnati.
Gardner played in 11 games in his true freshman season. He had 31 tackles and three interceptions, two of which were converted to touchdowns for his team. He added 11 passes defended and eight pass breakups. Gardner was named to the All-American Conference First-Team.
In 2020, he played in nine games during the pandemic. He had 28 tackles, 16 were solo, with three picks and six passes defended.
2021 was set up to be a big year for Gardner. He had 40 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, and four passes defended. He was a consensus All-American, and All-America Conference Defensive Player of the Year. For the third time, was First-Team All-ACC as well. In his three college seasons, nobody scored a touchdown against him. He was ready for the NFL Draft.
Gardner ran a 4.41 at the 2022 NFL Combine. That’s all he needed to do. He was a guaranteed Top-Ten pick.
The Jets selected him, and the hype machine was in full force. Gardner was an instant sensation among the fan base and an instant starter. In the 2022 season, he’s only given up one touchdown and is among the best corners in the NFL. The fact that he’s a rookie makes him a favorite to win the 2022-23 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.
