NHL Future Watch: Cole Sillinger Hockey Cards, Columbus Blue Jackets – Cole Sillinger was drafted 12th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2021 NHL Draft. This talented center had been getting better and better every season. Columbus caught on and took him a bit earlier than some had projected. They knew he was better than his father, Mike, who had a long NHL career and played a short time in Columbus.
In 2018-19, Sillinger had a chance to play four games for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL. He scored two points in four games and was due to return the next season.
In 2019-20, the pivot scored 22 goals with 31 assists in 41 games. The season never finished due to the pandemic. There were no playoffs, but luckily Sillinger got a nice taste of his first full season.
In 2020-21, in a shortened season, Sillinger had 24 goals and 46 points in 31 games with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL. He played there because the WHL was shut down again. Sillinger, born in Columbus, Ohio, was selected to play in the 2021 Biosteel All-American Game. His showing was strong. Sillinger won the USHL Rookie of the Year Award. It was obvious he had NHL talent. I ranked him 12th as a result heading into the draft.
In 2021-22, Sillinger arrived at the Blue Jackets training camp hoping to get his nine games of the regular season in before the team decided what to do with him. He was so good that he made the team and ended up scoring 16 goals with 15 assists in 79 games. Because he has Canadian citizenship, he played in the World Championships for Team Canada scoring three goals in 10 games.
At just 19, Sillinger works the 2-on-1 well with speed. He has a good one-timer and wrist shot needs. He uses deception to fool goalies. Now with Johnny Gaudreau and the rest of his team, the Jackets are a playoff contender once again.
