NHL Future Watch: Ian Mitchell Hockey Cards, Chicago Blackhawks – Ian Mitchell was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks with the 57th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. This smart defenseman was thought to be an NHL safe bet when he was drafted, and there’s no reason to believe that has changed. Another safe bet is that Mitchell is likely to improve on his rookie season.
Mitchell spent a little over two seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. That league is famous for producing Cale Makar, but Mitchell’s name doesn’t come up, though he was very good there. He was an All-Star who scored 64 points in 109 games, getting the attention of many teams including the Blackhawks.
The smart defenseman committed to the University of Denver. In his first season in the Mile High state, Mitchell had 30 points in 41 games. He was voted to the NCHC All-Rookie team and the All-Tournament team. Denver won the Frozen Four, making the rookie defenseman a champion.
By the time his second season rolled around, he was wearing the “A.” By his third season, he was team captain and had ten goals and 32 points in 36 games. Those are big numbers for a defenseman, and that meant he was ready to turn pro.
The 2020-21 season was a weird one. Mitchell played five AHL games and then eventually got the call to the big club in mid-January. Because of the strange circumstances of last season, I can’t say the club rushed him. It was better that he played.
Mitchell skated in 39 games, scoring seven points. He had three goals, but he wasn’t good defensively. After having a chance to reflect on that this season, in camp, he noted that his positioning needed work. If he had to do that in Rockford, it was fine. He’s only 22, so there’s going to be a time for him to shine, and he and the Blackhawks organization know that.
NHL Future Watch: Ian Mitchell Hockey Cards, Chicago Blackhawks – Cards Worth Chasing
Mitchell’s 2020-21 Young Guns rookie card is in Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey. It’s a solid action shot of him in a classic “Original Six” jersey.
Mitchell’s Young Guns canvas rookie card is terrific. He’s shooting, and the collector can see the flex in the stick. That’s good photography, and that’s how you elevate a rookie card.
The last card to shoot for is his 2021-22 Upper Deck Extended HoloGrFX gold rookie card. It’s a fun design for a player who will have a big NHL impact down the road.
