NHL Future Watch: Jack Rathbone Hockey Cards, Vancouver CanucksFuture Watch: Jack Rathbone Hockey Cards, Vancouver Canucks – Jack Rathbone may have an instant impact in Vancouver. He was drafted by the Canucks with the 95th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. This smart defenseman took an interesting path to get to the Canucks. Rathbone went from being relatively unknown by the fan base to an important player in their future. The transformation was fun to see.

I started hearing about an offensive defenseman who played for Dexter Southfield School at the NHL Combine. Jack Rathbone was his name, and that season he had 16 goals and 35 points in 22 games. When I found out he was personally scouted by Harvard University head coach, Ted Donato, I made sure to talk to him and find out everything I could about him.

The West Roxbury, MA native played two solid seasons for Harvard. One of his defensive teammates was recent Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox. When I first saw Rathbone play against Princeton University, his offensive zone entries were always fast and safe. A smart defenseman can go about his business and you don’t notice him, in a good way.

Rathbone’s two seasons with Harvard, saw him score 14 goals and 53 points in 61 games, gaudy numbers for a defenseman. His skating is NHL quality now, and he knows how to walk the line to keep the puck in the offensive zone on the power play. Additionally, his shot is good scoring in five on five and his passing is very accurate.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions in 2020-21, Rathbone only played in 16 professional games. It was an even split between the AHL team, the Utica Comets, and the NHL squad, where he scored his first NHL goal. His tenacity on defense makes you forget about the fact that he’s only 5’11”. This guy can play, and he will be in the NHL full-time for the 2021-22 campaign.

In a strange way, having only one current rookie card of Rathbone is kind of cool. It’s like the old days when you only had one chance of getting it in the year that he debuted. Upper Deck did get his Young Guns Rookie Card in 2020-21 Upper Deck Extended Series. This is the set to get his rookie card and more that should be on your want list.
