NHL Future Watch: Joel Hofer Hockey Cards, St. Louis Blues – Joel Hofer was drafted by the St. Louis Blues with the 107th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. This prospect netminder has been on an upwards trajectory ever since he heard his name announced at the draft. He could be the Blues’ goalie of the future.
At 6’3”, this backstop first starred for the Swift Current Broncos in the WHL. He played in 115 games in his junior hockey career, a three-year period. This includes after the draft when he was traded to the Portland Winterhawks and played there again in 2019-20. Over that time, he had a .910 save percentage including eight shutouts. He did manage to play a game in the AHL for the San Antonio Rampage, as well.
Hofer’s stock dramatically rose when he played in the 2020 U20 World Junior Championship for Hockey Canada and walked away with a gold medal, Best Goaltender, Best Save Percentage, Best Goals Against, and All-Star Team honors. In six games, Hofer had a minuscule 1.30 goals-against average with a .946 save percentage.
Hofer has no ego, and he uses every part of his uniform to make saves. He’ll use his head, the blocker, the excellent glove, anything to make a stop. Hofer does rely on his defenseman to clear when he makes the crazy saves but that’s their job. He could be the top goalie because he can handle a heavy or light workload and play the same way.
Hofer is off to a great start with the Springfield Thunderbirds, the Blues current AHL affiliate in 2021-22. Playing a game for the Blues was a nice glimpse into the future for him as well. He will be in St. Louis before you know it. At 21, there’s plenty of time to worry about that down the road.
Hofer’s best card is the 2020-21 Young Guns Rookie Card. It’s a great way to get an early start on collecting a talented young goalie. Collectors will have to play the long game with him like many players of the same position.
Another fun card of his resides in the 2020-21 Upper Deck AHL set. This is an early card of Hofer, who should have a terrific career ahead of him. That, and the action shot, make this a win for the collector.
One last card is in the 2018-19 Upper Deck CHL set. That’s a release that’s worth re-investigating knowing that Hofer is in there. So, it’s a win-win.
