2021-22 was his first full season in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks. He played in 63 games, netting nine goals and 27 assists. Cagnoni added three points in 11 playoff games as well. That was a solid rookie season.
In 2022-23, he played in 67 games and his point total grew. He had 17 goals and 47 assists. He had seven points in nine playoff games. Cagnoni was named to the WHL US Second All-Star team.
Cagnoni had a career year in 2023-24. The blueliner had 18 goals and 72 assists. Those are great numbers for a forward. In the playoffs, he was a point-per-game with 13 points in 13 games. He was named on the WHL US First All-Star Team. He had the most goals and assists of any WHL defenseman.
2024-25 was a big year for Cagnoni. He had a chance to turn professional and played the bulk of his season with the San Jose Barracuda in the AHL. The AHL is a big jump for a 20-year-old player. Add in the fact that he’s 5’9” and he has to figure out how to survive in a physical league. He produced 16 goals and 36 assists in 64 games and added two points in two playoff games. During the season, he got two games with the Sharks and was scoreless. Cagnoni was named to the AHL All-Rookie team.
Cagnoni will lay some hits and can stand up players. He blocks shots so I believe he does enough to get to the next level. If he gets that chance, he has a lot of offense to offer. That’s why he’s a must collect.
NHL Future Watch: Luca Cagnoni Hockey Cards Worth Collecting
One card to get Cagnoni’s 2023-24 Upper Deck CHL. This card is a good one to get before his Young Guns card comes out next year. The photo is a nice action shot.
Another card is his 2023-24 Upper Deck CHL Exclusives card numbered to just 100. This card is becoming more and more desirable.
Cagnoni has card #139 in the 2024-25 Upper Deck AHL set that just came out. He is that under the radar player who can snap up.
