NHL Future Watch: Mads Sogaard Hockey Cards, Ottawa Senators – Mads Sogaard was drafted by the Ottawa Senators with the 37th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. The Danish goalie is 6’7” and somewhere just over 200 pounds. Bigger goalies are the wave of the future in the NHL. All teams want at least one of them in their system, and Ottawa got theirs.
Through 2017, Sogaard played hockey in Denmark. There’s nothing wrong with that, and he was already representing their international teams in various tournaments.
In 2018, he came over to North America to play in the NAHL for the Austin Bruins. This professional league has done well giving opportunities to import goalies. Sogaard posted a .909 save percentage in 22 games. Most importantly, got a taste of North American hockey with a smaller ice surface compared to Europe.
He burst on the scene in 2018-19, with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the OHL. In 37 games he posted three shutouts and a .921 save percentage. Sogaard posted a .916 save percentage in six playoff games. During that season, he played for Denmark in the World Junior Championship. It was a terrific season.
In 2019-20, he played in 37 games. His save percentage took a hit and was down to .908.
In 2020-21, he stayed in Denmark and played for the Esbjerg Energy. Sogaard was on loan and that was smart. He played in 16 games with a 2.58 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. After playing in five postseason games, he turned pro, reporting to the AHL Belleville Senators. Sogaard went 7-0 with a .917 save percentage.
In 2021-22, Sogaard got a chance to live out his dream and play a few NHL games. In two games, he had a 3.07 goals against average and an .889 save percentage on a bad team. Back in Belleville, he played 35 games with a 19-14 record and a .908 save percentage.
In 2022-23, Sogaard had a .904 save percentage in his first 18 games in the AHL for a last-place team. It showed growth for this 22-year-old. Goalies develop at their own pace, so the best collecting method is to collect as many as you can and dig through them 4-5 years later.

Sogaard’s best card is his 2022-23 Upper Deck Young Guns Rookie. They managed to fit him on the card. Going after the French version of this card would also be worth it.
Another card is his 2022-23 Upper Deck Artifacts Rookie. He’s shown in his black sweater.
