Alberto Del Rio – WWE Biography

Alberto Del Rio was born in San Luis Potosi in 1977. His father is noted luchador Dos Caras. Alberto studied Greco-Roman Wrestling under training from Leonel Kolesni and Juan Fernandez. He earned a spot on the Mexico national team in Greco-Roman Wrestling and while competing he earned several accomplishments. In 1997, he placed third at the World Junior Championships. He also won the Central American and Caribbean Games in his weight division three times. He was on track to compete at the 2000 Olympics in Syndey, Australia but due to a lack of funding and support, Mexico did not send a wrestling team that year.

Del Rio turned to the family business with his sights set on becoming a professional wrestler. He wrestled in Mexico and Japan before joining the WWE in 2009. He signed a three-year contract with the WWE on June 17th, 2009. Instead of going to Florida Championship Wrestling (WWE’s developmental program) he went directly to the main roster. He wrestled in his first match at a house show in Brisbane, Australia in 2010 and a week later made his television debut on the August 20th episode of SmackDown where he defeated Rey Mysterio.

Del Rio would go on to feud with Mysterio and Christian in his early years with WWE. On January 30th, 2011, Del Rio defeated 39 other participants to win the 2011 Royal Rumble. He chose to compete for Edge’s World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII. Del Rio would go on to lose to Edge at WrestleMania. Del Rio would eventually win the WWE Championship by defeating CM Punk in the Main Event at SummerSlam, becoming the first ever Mexican-born WWE Champion.

Alberto Del Rio would go on to compete in the WWE until 2014. He fought in other wrestling organizations until 2015 when he made a surprise return to the WWE at Hell in a Cell. He would continue to wrestle with the company until September 9th, 2016 after coming to terms with the company on his release.

On October 11th, 2016, Del Rio was named President of MMA promotion Combate Americas. It was merely a figurehead role with Del Rio holding no actual power in the company. He was in charge of promoting the brand to Mexican media. Del Rio is now set to face former UFC Champion Tito Ortiz on December 7th at a Combate Americas event in Hidalgo, Texas.
