Off the Post: Avalanche Defeat Flyers, Rantanen Scores Two Goals

On Monday evening, the Colorado Avalanche rolled into Philadelphia in search of their sixth victory. They scored four goals on the Flyers, holding them to just one. Mikko Rantanen, right wing for the Avalanche, got his team on the board early with a power play goal in the first period. He put another puck in the net in the third period to give the Avs a 4-1 lead. Rantanen now has 16 points in nine games this season. Good for a three-way tie for first in the league. After the game, he spoke with Russ Cohen about his stellar start to the season.

Mikko Rantanen, Right Wing – Colorado Avalanche

Rantanen was selected by the Avalanche with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. After an impressive training camp and preseason in 2015, it was announced that he had made the team’s opening night roster at 18-years old. He would play in six games before being sent to the team’s AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. Rantanen shined in the AHL, leading the club in all offensive categories and earning a place on the AHL All-Star Game roster. He was the second-youngest participant in the event’s modern history. Rantanen finished his AHL season with 60 points, becoming just the seventh teenager to reach that mark in 52 games.

In 2016, Rantanen found his way to the Avalanche and scored his first NHL goal on November 11th. During the 2016-17 season, he played in 75 games and scored 38 points (20 goals, 18 assists). He exploded onto the scene in 2017-18, playing in 81 games for the Avs and scored 84 points (29 goals, 55 assists). This year, he’s picked up right where he left off last season. Through nine games, he has 16 points (four goals, 12 assists). He’s currently tied in first place for points scored with three other players. Collectors can find Rantanen’s cards among many 2018-19 Upper Deck Hockey products including Series One, SP Game Used, Trilogy and more!
