Off The Post: Cale Makar NHL Hockey Cards, Colorado Avalanche – A former 4th overall selection by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Makar, who just turned 23 years old, is in the midst of just his third full season in the NHL. And, the 2020 Calder Trophy winner has already established himself as one of the top defensemen in the league.

Not only is the 5-foot-11, 187-pound Makar a great defensemen, but he’s also one of the most dynamic offensive players in the game. Makar, who signed a six-year, $54 million contract extension this past summer, is off to an amazing start this season. Through 22 games, Makar has recorded 12 goals and 13 assists and is currently on pace to become the first defenseman in 15 years to reach 30 goals. The last defenseman to score 30 goals was former Washington Capitals All-Star Mike Green, who had 31 goals and 42 assists during the 2008-09 season.

In this clip, captured by our own Russ Cohen, Makar talked about his highlight reel goal against the Philadelphia Flyers in the Avalanche’s 7 – 5 win last week. Makar also talked about how the Avalanche have improved defensively, even though they are a high-powered offensive team.

The future outlook for Makar’s card market is extremely bright. He’s already an elite player, who possesses an ascending skill set on a team that is destined to be a contender for years to come. Not to mention, Denver is one of the best hockey cities in the country. When the Avalanche won Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001 with the likes of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy leading the way, the hockey card market couldn’t get enough of their cards. Even though Makar is a defenseman and usually defensemen don’t translate well to the hobby, he’s different and is one to get in on now and in the future.
