Off The Post: Doug Wilson, Call to the Hall – Doug Wilson spoke with media during a special call with 2020 Hockey Hall of Fame inductees. Wilson, currently the General Manager of the San Jose Sharks, spent most of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks and amassed more than 800 points in 1027 NHL games. The former San Jose Sharks captain and joins the hallowed Hall this year alongside several other luminaries.
Wilson entered the NHL after a being drafted sixth overall by Chicago in 1977, choosing the team and league over the WHA (he was picked by the Indianapolis Racers fifth overall the same year). Wilson immediately went to the big league and impressed out of the gate, counting 34 points in 77 games.
Over the next few seasons, Wilson’s game steadily improved and ultimately tabulated 85 points in 76 games in 1981-82. Those numbers helped propel Wilson to his only Norris Trophy (best defenceman) win that off-season. Wilson continued with the Blackhawks following and only once saw his point totals dip below 40 – in 1987-88 when he only played 32 games. Wilson still holds records for most goals and points by a Blackhawks defenceman.
Following the 1991 season, the expansion San Jose Sharks traded for Wilson and named him their first-ever captain. Wilson went on to play for two seasons with the fledgling team before calling it a career in 1993. After spending four seasons with Hockey Canada, Wilson returned to San Jose and rose up their ranks to being named General Manager in 2003. He has held the position ever since and has built the club into a perennial playoff and Stanley Cup contender.
Wilson was a big part of many hockey card sets amid the boom period and has been included in products from Upper Deck and Panini (while it had a license) in recent years. Overall, more than 600 unique Doug Wilson cards have been indexed.
