Off The Post: Kevin Lowe Hockey Cards, Call to the Hall – Kevin Lowe spoke with media during a special call with 2020 Hockey Hall of Fame inductees. Lowe was the first-ever Edmonton Oilers draft pick (1979) and made the most of his time with the WHA import, capturing five Stanley Cups, one King Clancy Trophy and wearing the “C” as captain.
Lowe’s best years, unquestionably, came with Edmonton. Though he was never a major offensive threat, Lowe was integral to the team’s dynasty success as a true defender. In 15 years with the Oilers, Lowe recorded a plus-minus rating of +250, unheard of numbers. His ability to cover the back half of the rink not only let the offence explode, but also fellow rearguard Paul Coffey.
Lowe’s career in Edmonton concluded in December 1992 when, as a restricted free agent, he was dealt to the New York Rangers for Roman Oksiuta. The defenceman helped the Broadway Blueshirts gain their first Stanley Cup in over 50 years during his tenure with the club, before ultimately re-signing with Edmonton in 1996 and playing his last two years with the team.
Lowe went on to be a major executive with the Oilers. Just three years following hanging up the skates, the Lachute, QC native was named the team’s general manager, adding to his duties as Head Coach.
Lowe part of many hockey card sets in the 1980s and 90s, but his inclusion waned following his retirement. His only licensed cards, since hanging up the skates, came in 2018-19 Upper Deck Chronology, and those contain only his second group of autographed cards. Overall, fewer than 300 unique Kevin Lowe cards have been indexed.
Congratulations Kevin Lowe!
