As a freshman at St. Cloud State, he played in 35 games and scored 13 points. He was named to the 2016-17 NCHC Academic All-Conference Team.

At the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Poehling was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round with the twenty-fifth overall pick.
