Off The Post: Stars Beat Predators in Winter Classic, Ben Bishop Interview – The Dallas Stars have an All-Star and Vezina finalist in Ben Bishop. The personable goalie is excited to play in the Winter Classic. He wants to have fun but also wants the two points in this divisional game against the Nashville Predators. The Stars handed the Predators a 4-2 loss on New Year’s Day. Before the game, Stars goalie Ben Bishop spoke with Russ Cohen.

Ben Bishop: Goalie, Dallas Stars

Bishop was born in Denver, Colorado in 1986. He played minor ice hockey in St. Louis for the St. Louis Junior Blues. He played forward until the age of eight when he converted to goaltender. He would move to Frisco, Texas in high school, and attended college at the University of Maine. He played for the Texas Tornado of the NAHL in 2004-05. He appeared in 45 games that season and posted a league-best record of 35 wins (including 5 shutouts). That season he would lead the Tornados to their second consecutive National Championship.

A the University of Maine, Bishop finished his freshman season with a 21-8-2 record and a 2.28 GAA. In 2006, he led the Black Bears to the 2006 Frozen Four where they would lose to UW-Madison in the semi finals. The next season, Bishop again helped the Black Bears reach the Frozen Four where they lost to Michigan State in the semi-finals.

Bishop was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the third round, 85th overall, of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut on October 24th, 2008 off the bench in relief of the injured Manny Legace. Bishop appeared in six games with the Blues in 2008-09 and was the back-up goalie for the team in all four of their playoff games that season.

Collectors looking for Ben Bishop’s rookie cards can find them in 2008-09 Upper Deck Hockey products. His Young Guns rookie card appears in 2008-09 Upper Deck Series 2.

On February 26th, 2012, Bishop was traded to the Ottawa Senators. He made his Senators debut on March 6th, 2012. He would finish the season with a 3-3-2 record and a 2.48 GAA in ten games. On April 3rd, 2013, Bishop was traded at the deadline to Tampa Bay. He shut out the Carolina Hurricanes 5-0 in his Lightning debut on April 4th. Shortly after, he signed a two-year extension with Tampa. He set a Lightning franchise career-high with 48 saves in another victory over Carolina on January 19th, 2014.

Bishop flourished in Tampa, earning a nomination for the Vezina Trophy in 2013-14. He made his Stanley Cup playoff debut in a 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings in 2015. Later in the playoffs, he joined Tim Thomas and Patrick Roy as the only goaltenders to post shutouts in two Game 7s in a single playoff year. He also became the first goaltender to earn two shutouts in two Game 7s in his first season in the playoffs. The Lightning would go on to lose to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games in the 2015 Stanley Cup Final.

At the 2017 NHL Trade Deadline, Bishop was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. He was acquired as a backup to the team’s star goalie Jonathan Quick and appeared in seven games with the club. On May 9th, 2017, the Kings traded Bishop to the Dallas Stars. Shortly after the acquisition, Dallas signed Bishop to a six-year contract. In 127 games with Dallas, Bishop has a 67-41-10 record with a .925 SV% and 2.27 GAA.
