Off the Post: Throwback Thursday Edition – Mitch Marner, Maple Leafs – Coming into the NHL, Mitch Marner had high expectations on his shoulders.

After being selected fourth overall in 2015’s NHL Entry Draft and spending one last year in Juniors (where he captured MVP honors as well as the Memorial Cup), Marner earned his spot with the historic Toronto team, playing alongside another expected future Superstar, Auston Matthews. That year, Marner made an incredible first impression. After scoring in just his second NHL game, Marner amassed 61 points in 72 games.

Collectors, who had already started to pick up his Team Canada cards, flocked to his Young Guns rookie card among a bevvy of other hot RCs. Those who did are now reaping the rewards for their early purchase, as Marner continues to be one of the most in-demand superstars in hockey, thanks to his continued incredible play. In 2018-19, just his third year in the NHL, Marner tallied 94 points, including 26 goals, establishing career highs. In the Covid-19-shortened 2019-20 NHL season, Marner counted 67 points in 59 games.

All told, Marner now sits just shy of a point-per-game pace in NHL regular season games (291 points in 300 contests) and has one NHL All-Star Game berth on his resume. Add that Marner continues to play alongside Matthews and other young studs like William Nylander, in the hobby and media-heavy Toronto market, and you have a recipe for hobby popularity.

Today, we flash back to Marner’s rookie season as he chats with reporters during the NHL Centennial Classic. Have a listen, then pick up some new Mitch Marner cards, including from 2019-20 Upper Deck Stature and 2019-20 SP Authentic!
