Off The Uprights: Throwback Thursday with Antonio Cromartie! – This week we head back to 2006 to speak with Antonio Cromartie, shortly after he was picked 19th overall by the San Antonio Chargers during the 2006 NFL Draft.

Cromartie’s incredible career would see the Tallahassee, FL native become a four-time Pro Bowler, record 416 tackles, snare 31 interceptions and score six touchdowns. The most well remembered of those was his record 109-yard return off a missed field goal. Along with the Chargers, Cromartie had two stints with the New York Jets and one each with the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts. Cromartie was a one-time All-Pro and led the NFL in interceptions in 2007.

Our very own Russ Cohen talked with Cromartie shortly after hearing his name called.

After the draft, Cromartie signed a 5-year, $13.5 million contract with the Chargers. In his first season with the team, he saw action at cornerback and on special teams. Toward the end of the season, Cromartie handled some punt and kickoff return duties, as well. In a game against the Oakland Raiders, the burgeoning young star returned a kickoff 91 yards, the longest return for the team since 2001. It was a harbinger of things to come.

Cromartie rookie cards (34 in all) can be found in multiple 2006 football card products from Topps, Donruss and Upper Deck.
