Racing Future Watch: Ayumu Iwasa F1 Cards, Red Bull – Ayumu Iwasa has risen through the developmental ranks – first in his native Japan – to forge a reputation in the global open-wheel ranks. The grandson of a racer and son of two parents who competed in Honda Civil spec races, Iwasa has racing very much in his blood.
Iwasa’s initial competitive races came in karting. In his first year of competition, 2014, he won the Suzuka Karting Championship Yamaha-SS Class. The single-seater format beckoned in 2017, as Iwasa joined the F4 Japanese Championship. Iwasa’s first full season came in 2019 in the Suzuka Racing School’s Single Seater Series where he won the championship.
The 2020 French F4 Championship represented Iwasa’s big glow-up. There, he had five pole positions, nine wins, 15 podiums and a series title. The FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2021 presented many more challenges, but Iwasa rallied to finish fourth among rookies. Having felt tentative at the outset of that season, Iwasa vowed not to make the same mistake in 2022 when he was promoted to the FIA Formula 2 Championship – and he certainly didn’t. With two wins and six podiums to his credit, Iwasa finished the season in fifth place and captured the Anthoine Hubert Award. Iwasa advanced to fourth place in 2023 behind a pole, three wins and three podiums.
He returned to Japan in 2024 to compete in Super Formula, further rounding out his experience. Iwasa also remains in the Formula One system, having become a Red Bull Junior in 2021 and driving the practice session in the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix. As he continues to develop, Iwasa is marking himself as someone with a bright future on the international racing scene.
