It’s unusual for Manchester City to be welcoming in an English-born prospect who spent his entire progression in the US. Given McFarlane’s competitiveness and record of standing out against older players, City fans are justified in their optimism.

McFarlane started with JIGS Soccer Academy on Long Island. Then he segued to the NYCFC youth academy in 2018. On September 16, 2021, McFarlane signed his first pro contract at 14 years and seven months. That made him the third-youngest player in MLS history. Nine months later, McFarlane debuted with the New York City FC II squad.

Eligible to compete for either England or the United States in international play, McFarlane dabbled with both country’s squads at the under-16 and under-17 levels. McFarlane started three of four games for England at the 2024 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. On September 4, 2024, McFarlane debuted for the England U18 team in France.

McFarlane’s former coach Nick Cushing described him as someone who played with “real personality and character … [with] real potential.” As he begins to make his mark for Man City, McFarlane will push for playing time relatively quickly as his club and international careers truly take flight.

McFarlane’s cards and stickers include parallels and inserts. They date to 2022. Finest, Topps Renaissance and Topps MLS are represented among the brands. Some of the more prized items on eBay presently are the 2022 Topps MLS Renaissance Platinum Autograph, 2022 Topps Chrome Auto Orange Refractor and 2022 Topps Finest MLS Red Autograph Rookie NYCFC.
