Soccer Future Watch: Fermín López Soccer Cards, Barcelona – Fermin Lopez had the best 2024 summer that any player could have hoped for. He and his teammate Alex Baena became only the second and third players ever to win the UEFA European Championship and Olympic gold in the same year. These feats come early in a career which projects to keep piling up championships and individual acclaim.
Hailing from El Campillo, Huelva, Andalusia, Lopez began playing with CD FB El Campillo before moving to Recreativo de Huelva and then Real Betis in 2012. Four years later, Lopez advanced to the Barcelona youth academy.
In August 2022, Lopez turned pro and then immediately started a loan period with Linares Deportivo. That season he posted 12 goals in 40 games. A year before his monster 2024 summer, Lopez established himself in training with Barcelona. He earned a spot on the senior roster for the 2023-24. One standout moment was scoring a goal and an assist in a 3-0 friendly win over Real Madrid.
Lopez closed out his first La Liga season with eight goals. Additionally, Lopez distinguished himself among other midfielders in a variety of ways. He placed in the 99th percentile in non-penalty goals, the 99th in non-penalty expected goals, the 99th in shots, the 98th in touches and the 95th in progressive passes received. A technically skilled player with extraordinary instincts about where to appear in a play, Lopez faces heavy competition for meaningful minutes on a deep team. But Lopez is well on his way to forcing himself to the forefront in league and international play for a long time to come.
