WNBA Future Watch: Ayanna Patterson Basketball Cards, Prospect – Ayanna Patterson has as her foundation of success wonderful genetics, but they almost took her in a different direction. With a father and brother who played pro ball, Patterson’s hardwood potential was hard-wired into her DNA. But it was her track-running mother who she initially set out to emulate, aspiring to reach the Olympics as a sprinter. However, she decided to focus on basketball after a positive AAU experience.
From there, this gifted guard/forward was off to the races. Patterson earned 2020-21 Outside the Huddle Girls Basketball Player of the Year and ABC21 2020-21 Girls Basketball Player of the Year status in her junior season, providing the baseline for a dream senior season. With 25.8 PPG, 11.8 RPG and 2.1 BPG, Patterson became 2022 Indiana Miss Basketball, 2022 IndyStar Miss Basketball and a McDonald’s, Naismith Jordan Brand and SLAM All-American.
Patterson also became the all-time rebounding and blocks leader and placed second all-time in scoring for the vaunted Homestead High School program in Ft. Wayne, IN. On a team level, Patterson led Homestead to four consecutive sectional championships.
The #4 ranked recruit in the 2022 class by ESPN and the #1 wing, Patterson also became an object of great fascination due to her initial in-game dunk on December 21, 2021.
By attending UConn, Patterson passed up the opportunity to be a big fish in a small pond, instead preferring to swim in the figurative ocean. At 8th in MPG, Patterson has essentially been outside the rotation for this powerhouse, but has made the most of her few chances, shooting .724 FT%.
A gold medal winner at the 2021 3×3 U18 World Cup, Patterson is celebrated for her offensive and defensive prowess, with her remaining college time likely to see her being featured as a primary option with the ball. A natural leader and incredibly gifted athlete, Patterson is building a record that is likely to lead to incredible success at the WNBA level.
