Future Watch: Michael Matheson Hockey Rookie Cards, Panthers – Michael Matheson is a 22-year old defenseman who was selected by the Florida Panthers with the 23rd overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. After three solid years at Boston College he carved out a niche playing for the San Antonio Rampage, before getting a shot with the Panthers. He played in playoff series for both teams and then he represented Canada in the World Championships. He walked away with a gold medal for his trouble. That was quite a year and he’s just getting started.

Coming into the 2016-17 season the Florida Panthers hope to avenge their first round playoff defeat and Matheson is expected to be one of their top-six blueliners who are tasked to getting the franchise back to the Stanley Cup Final.

Matheson’s terrific skating style, strong defense, and offensive capabilities could land him in the teams’ top four in the near future. These are some high expectations for a guy with just eight NHL games under his belt but he as the ability.

Here’s a feature on this talented rearguard:

Michael Matheson has NHL licensed rookie cards in 2016-17 Upper Deck MVP, 2016-17 O-Pee-Chee Hockey and, the just released, 2016-17 NHL Artifacts Hockey. If he can put up points at his position, collectors will have interest. Offensive-defenseman have always had a well-respected place in the hobby.

At 6′-2″, 192lbs he has the perfect measurables to exceed in today’s game. He has a lot of talented teammates and now he’s just waiting for the season to start. The organization has tabbed him as their version of Duncan Keith. Since GM Dale Tallon drafted both players we have to let him have his say on that matter.

Offensively he’s still behind Aaron Ekblad and Keith Yandle but that still leaves a lot of minutes for him to get out there and prove that he’s a player to reckon with now and 10 years from now.
