Future Watch: Patrick Mahomes II Rookie Football Cards, Chiefs – Patrick Mahomes II was selected 10th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft. On most other teams, the top-10 pick would be the starting quarterback but Alex Smith is a terrific game manager on maybe the best team in the NFL. For now, Mahomes will have to hold the clipboard.
Mahomes started out as a three-sport star at Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. He probably knew he couldn’t sustain a career in baseball, basketball and football so he chose the latter. He threw for 50 passing touchdowns, 15 running, and he threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts all in his senior year.
Texas Tech was fortunate to get an athlete of his caliber. As their quarterback, he threw for 734 yards in one game! That is an NCAA record. So were his 819 total yards. In 2016, he was voted to the second team All-Big 12. He was also on the second Academic All-American team in that same year and he capped it off with the Sammy Baugh Trophy, recognizing him as the nation’s best passer.
In preseason, he did everything right. He knew the playbook. He didn’t look out of place. He could make cross-body throws, which can be among the toughest in the sport. He has a very strong arm and now he’ll have to wait while they pile up wins with their veteran. Fans are itching to see him get into an NFL game.
