Leaf’s JFK, Lee Harvey Oswald Cut Signature Booklet Card: Where is It Now?
On the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, Leaf would like to know whatever happened to its most controversial card
Carrollton, TX (Nov. 26, 2013) – Much has been done this past week to honor the legacy of one of the country’s greatest U.S. Presidents of all time: John Fitzgerald Kennedy. JFK, the nation’s 35th Commander-in-Chief, was assassinated 50 years ago this week in Dallas in what was easily one of the saddest days in the nation’s history.
“It was a tragic day,” said Leaf CEO Brian Gray. “People could not believe that their President was taken from them so quickly.”
Leaf Trading Cards, known to push the envelope when it comes to some of its product releases, produced a dual-cut signature booklet card of JFK and his assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, two years ago inside its 2011 Pop Century product. The rare 1-of-1 card even included an actual piece of the leather seat from the 1961 Lincoln Presidential limousine in which the President and First Lady were riding that fateful day (Nov. 22, 1963). The card packed out and quickly went up on eBay where it sold for more than $10,000 in the summer of 2011. Leaf officials would like to know who has the card now and what it would fetch at auction this year.
“We polled our crew and the most common answer was $15,000 to $25,000,” said Jonathan Scheier, consignment director at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.
Regardless of the peculiar nature of the card, history buffs and private collectors would no doubt pay top dollar for that card. In JFK auctions held earlier this year, the former President’s memorabilia and artifacts sold for record numbers: Kennedy’s Air Force One leather jacket ($570,000); an 18-carat gold ring given to the President by his wife in 1963 and engraved on the inside with “J.B.K. to J.F.K.” ($90,000); JFK’s monogrammed shaving kit ($27,600); and a black necktie worn by JFK ($8,720).
Believe it or not, even some of Oswald’s artifacts are fetching top prices: gold wedding band purchased in Minsk before his April 1961 wedding to Marina Prusaakova ($108,000); his U.S. Marine Crops rifle score book ($54,000); and his official Dallas Police Department mug shot ($21,600).
