Future Watch: Alexander Yelesin Hockey Cards, Calgary Flames – The KHL has interesting standing when it stacks up against the NHL. Many former players move to the Russian league to further their careers, while others start their hockey trails here, hoping to make it to the NHL. Among those who has been successful in their move to North America is Alexander Yelesin.

Yelesin was born in Yaroslavl, Russia and started his hockey journey by taking part in the hometown Lokomotiv’s Under-16 developmental program. Playing in the system, known as MHL, Yelesin got a strong amount of ice time as he prepared to one day enter the KHL ranks. His first pro minutes came with HC Ryazan of the Supreme Hockey League (aka VHL) and showed promise by putting together 5 points in 22 games.

In July 2016, Lokomotiv dealt the young defender to Amur Khabarovsk, and it was with his new club that Yelesin made his KHL debut. Through 22 games, Yelesin counted one assist, and at the end of the campaign he was dealt back to Yaroslavl

The 2017-18 season saw Yelesin spend the majority of time with Lokomotiv. The d-man counted 8 points in 32 regular season games and one goal in 9 playoff games. One year later, Yelesin participated in the KHL All-Star Game while he posted 10 points in 55 games and helped Lokomotiv enter the playoffs once again.

Following the 2018-19 season, Yelesin moved his game to North America, signing on with the Calgary Flames. Yelesin was assigned to the Stockton Heat of the AHL, where he counted 5 points in 38 games. He also got a four-game NHL audition with the parent club, starting a path that should see the 24 year-old standout spend more time in the NHL during the 2020-21 season

Yelesin has two rookie cards so far in the NHL – in 2020-21 MVP and 2020-21 O-Pee-Chee. If you’re up for a challenge, you can also hunt down Yelesin’s Sereal cards from his time in the K. Whichever cards you pick up, know that you’re getting an exciting player who has an Al MacInnis-style shot and a strong presence on the ice.
