Future Watch: Carl Grundstrom Rookie Hockey Cards, Kings – Carl Grundstrom was drafted 57th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 NHL Draft. He no longer plays for the Leafs but the path that he took to his new team is interesting.
From 2013-14 through 2015-16, Grundstrom worked his way through Modo Hockey. He finally made it to the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) in 2014-15. At that point, he was playing against men and the numbers didn’t matter. However, his ability to play at this level, at such a young age, was impressive.
In 2015-16, he was making an impact in the SHL. He had 16 points in 49 games and four points in seven playoff games.
In 2016-17, he was playing for Frolunda and scored 14 goals and 20 points in 45 games. This included a run of 14 playoff games. He won the Champions League and had the most points by a junior. He then joined the Toronto Marlies for the AHL playoffs and he scored four points, including three goals, in six games.
In 2017-18, he had 17 goals and 24 total points in 35 games for Frolunda. After the playoffs, he joined the Marlies and had three points in two regular-season games and eight goals and 14 points in 20 playoff games, helping bring home a Calder Cup Championship to the Marlies.
In international play, this winger has been a stud. He scored 13 points in 19 games between the U18s and U20s.
Collectors can find Carl Grundstrom’s Young Guns rookie card in 2019-20 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey. He also has NHL licensed rookie cards in this year’s Trilogy, SP Game-Used, SPx, and Synergy, to name a few.
He scored a goal in his NHL debut.
In 2018-19, the Swede had 13 goals in 29 games for the Marlies. In late January he got traded in a high-profile trade to the Los Angeles Kings. In parts of two seasons, he has 10 points in 28 NHL games and more in the AHL for the Ontario Reign. Now 22, next season could be a breakout year and he’s worth collecting because he’s proven he can score goals at every level.
