Future Watch: Dallas Goedert Rookie Football Cards, Eagles – Dallas Goedert was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 49th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Coming off a Super Bowl Championship, led by a very talented tight end Zach Ertz, getting another talented pass-catching tight end wasn’t their immediate need.
Goedert was a walk-on at South Dakota University. He started out as a redshirted freshman. During his time there he had 198 receptions for 2,988 yards and 21 touchdowns. He had two-straight, 1,000-yard seasons. In his senior year, he had seven touchdowns. He was a two-time FCS All-American there and in 2016 a Walter Payton Award Finalist (the top player in the FCS). In 2018 he was invited to play in the Senior Bowl, but he withdrew because of an injury.
At 6-5, 256 at the time, he impressed scouts with 23 reps on the bench press. They already knew he could run great routes and catch the ball. But alas, as a tight end, most teams won’t spend a top draft pick on that position and that’s when he fell in the lap of the Philadelphia Eagles.
The rookie tight end played sparingly the first few weeks but in Week 3 he had seven catches for 73 yards and his first NFL touchdown. He bounced around a bit after that but in Week 7 and 8 he had a touchdown in each of those games. In a Week 14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, he had another strong game with four catches for 44 yards and another touchdown.
The best is yet to come for this rookie. He’s averaging 10.6 yards per catch. It won’t get him the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, but it should win him some fans in the hobby.
