At that time, he was starring in the QMJHL and the Flyers thought he would add some offense to their organization.

Martel played three seasons with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. He piled up some impressive points including 102 the season the Flyers signed him. In 196 games he had 203 points.

In 2015, he got a cup of coffee with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms playing in five games while netting one goal and two assists. The next season was his first full one as a professional and he had 22 goals and 37 points in 67 games. In 2016-17 he had 20 goals and 40 points in 68 games.

During this season he turned 23. He clearly had risen to a new level scoring 25 goals and getting 40 points. At 5-8 the forward has to work really hard for every inch of the ice. Now 166 pounds he’s trying to get himself ready for the next step.

There’s no age limit when a player should play in the NHL. Everyone develops at their own pace and this French-Canadian has done that. He’s improved defensively, and he has NHL speed. He did manage to get into four games with the Flyers this season showing he’s getting closer.

Currently, the Phantoms are on a nice playoff run. In eight games he has four goals and seven points. He’s getting hot at the right time with the Flyers brass watching his every move.

In a recent game he was a part of AHL history playing the longest game ever that was six hours and five overtime periods. His team came out of it with a win and he got a goal.

Here’s a look at some of his goals:

Martel has a Young Guns rookie card in Upper Deck Series 2 hockey. You can find an autograph of him in the 2017-18 Upper Deck AHL hockey set as well.
