professional sports. With a wide-array of wonderkids from various countries to choose from, there’s an 18-year old from Germany who’s taking The Hobby universe and football world by storm. Meet Florian Wirtz – he could be the next big thing in soccer.
Soccer card collectors and soccer fans who are familiar with the 5-foot-9, 154-pound phenom understand the talent Wirtz possesses. He can do it all on the pitch and is a magician with the ball. He’s an ultra-dynamic midfielder who possesses outstanding vision and a knack for exploiting gaps, while creating space and scoring chances for himself and his teammates. Wirtz has been compared to German superstar Kai Havertz, who left Bayer Leverkusen for Chelsea prior to the start of the 2020-21 season and paved the way for Wirtz to join Die Werkself (Bayer Leverkusen’s nickname).
Wirtz’s immediate impact with Leverkusen has been felt all over Europe. Last season, Wirtz, who at the time was 17 years and 34 days old, became the youngest player to score a goal in Bundesliga league history. However, six months later, Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko overtook Wirtz as the youngest goal scorer at 16 years and 28 days old. The talent that flows through the soccer pipeline is incredibly fruitful.
Wirtz made more history in the months ahead. This past February, Wirtz became the youngest player in league history to score five goals before his 18th birthday. And, last month, he became the youngest player to reach 10 league goals.
So far this season, he’s appeared in 10 matches and scored four goals and six assists. Wirtz’s hot start led to him being named the Bundesliga Player of the Month for September.
As amazing as Wirtz has been for Bayer Leverkusen, it’s only a matter of time before Europe’s top teams make a strong push for him. Real Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona are all rumored to be interested in Wirtz. Wirtz’s contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2026, but it’s hard to rule anything out during the summer transfer window. The one caveat is that Wirtz’s parents handle his career, not an agent. That could be a major factor in his next move, as it’s likely to be a family decision.

If you’re looking to get in on Wirtz’s cards, he doesn’t have a lot of options at this point, but what’s available is extremely popular on the secondary market. The most popular card of Wirtz is his 2020-21 Topps Chrome Bundesliga #64. It’s a great looking card that features an up-close action shot of Wirtz. The card has plenty of appeal and is in high demand regardless of whether it’s the base, refractor, serial numbered parallel or autographed card.
The other card that’s also very popular and what collectors view as Wirtz’s true rookie card, even though it doesn’t have the RC shield, is his 2019-20 Topps Now Bundesliga #170. The card commemorates Wirtz’s first Bundesliga goal, when he was the youngest goal scorer in league history. With a print run of only 2,141, it’ll always be a collector’s favorite.
For those who want a premium Wirtz card on the current market, look no further than his 2020-21 Topps Tier One Bundesliga Break Out Autographs #BOFW. The Break Out Autographs card of Wirtz has various serial numbered versions of different colors available, including silver (/125), black (/25), red (/10) and gold (1-of-1). It’s not an on-card autograph, but it’s the only Wirtz card that features the RC shield.
One more Wirtz card to consider is his 2020-21 Finest Bundesliga #64. It costs less than the aforementioned cards and has a premium look and feel that’s sure to please.
