Future Watch: Garrett Mitchell Baseball Cards, Milwaukee Brewers – Garrett Mitchell was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 20th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Amateur Draft. This 6-3 outfielder has power and speed, and that’s a good blend to have to play the outfield.

Mitchell attended Lutheran High School of Orange County, in Orange, California. He was a four-year letterman in baseball and did that while dealing with Type 1 Diabetes he’s had since the age of nine. Mitchell has to be careful and has bigger challenges than the average player but managed correctly, he can have a long, productive career in baseball.

This talented player decided to attend the University of Southern California – a baseball institution. During the summer of 2017, Mitchell played for Walla Walla in the West Coast League hitting a cool .462. That got him named to the Collegiate Baseball Preseason High School All-America second team.

2018 was his freshman season at USC roaming the outfield in Dedeaux Field It was a solid year start as he hit .280 with 19 runs scored with 31 RBI in 44 games.

His sophomore season was special. Mitchell hit .349 with 14 doubles, six home runs, 41 RBI, and 57 runs scored. The outfielder’s speed was on display as well swiping 18 bases in 22 attempts. As far as fielding went, he was perfect; no errors in 124 attempts in addition to recording two outfield assists. Mitchell was named an All-American by the NCBWA (Third Team) as well as an ABCA Gold Glove Finalist.

In 2020, the California native started every game in center field. In a season shortened by Covid-19, Mitchell hit .355 with a .484 on-base percentage with six doubles in 15 games while only striking out three times! That made him the 12th hardest player to strike out in NCAA baseball. He smacked ten hits in his last ten at-bats. That was the longest hitting streak on the squad.

When Mitchell was selected 20th overall, that was the highest-drafted position player for USC since Chase Utley was selected 15th overall in 2000. Mitchell had 15-career triples which rank second in Trojans history.

Here’s a look at Mitchell in action showing off his fielding and hitting:

Mitchell did not get to play/practice at the Brewers alternate site while the big leaguers played the 2020 season. Instead, he was on Zoom calls with the Brewers training staff including their nutritionist to make sure he was going to be ready to play baseball somewhere in the Brewers’ minor league system in 2021.

Mitchell needs a few more years to play in the big leagues. Many say he is indeed the team’s top prospect supplanting shortstop prospect Brice Turang. As Mitchell gets strong, his doubles power will turn into home run power. He’s a must collect. There’s too much raw ability here to pass on.
