Future Watch: Isaac Okoro Basketball Cards, Cleveland Cavaliers – Isaac Okoro carries with him the expectation that he will be one of the best defensive players in the NBA early in his career. If healthy, there is little question that he will accomplish that; the real question is what else he can do on the court.
With hustle, athleticism and a wingspan just shy of 6-9, Okoro has the capacity to match up credibly on the defensive end of the floor with every position except center – and possibly even there when the other team goes small. And yet, when a team like Cleveland passes up players with more offensive polish with the fifth pick in the draft, the defining question of his career will be this: on the spectrum between Stacey Augmon/Bruce Bowen on one end and Jimmy Butler/Kawhi Leonard on the other extreme, where will he land? How far beyond “lockdown defender” can he progress in his development?
With few regular-season minutes under his belt due to a combination of a left foot injury and COVID-19 protocols, the early encouraging answers actually came from the preseason, when his offense lived up to the team’s faith in him, starting with 18 points and the game-winning layup in the opener against Indiana, as seen below:
Okoro followed this performance by chipping in 15 points against the Pacers in the next game. An overall preseason mark of five three-pointers in eight attempts bodes well in a league increasingly dominated by floor spacing. And then, on January 7 came his NBA breakthrough: a huge block, followed shortly by a game-clinching dunk to lead the injury-depleted Cavs over Memphis.
A decent secondary playmaker on a team with many of them in a system that mandates crisp passing, part of Okoro’s way forward will include finding a multiplicity of ways to make his teammates better. He will fill up the stat sheet in many categories in his rookie season. As for his career, he will go as far as his jump shot takes him – to the stratosphere in a best-case scenario.
