Future Watch: Jalen Green’s Journey to the NBA Starts Now – Jalen Green enters the NBA as a pioneer in a new form of player development, having spent his first year out of high school not at the NCAA level or even overseas, but as a member of the G League Ignite – an all-star team comprised of prospects such as Green who wished to have the chance to attain specialized coaching and earn some pay while still facing external competition. Along with forward Jonathan Kuminga, Green was one of the consensus top five prospects in the 2021 NBA Draft pursuing this path in its initial opportunity.
Green’s path to becoming the consensus top shooting guard in the draft began early, with AAU ball in the sixth grade laying the groundwork for an incredibly decorated high school career that began as a freshman. During Green’s sophomore and junior seasons, he led San Joaquin Memorial to the California Central Division II Championship before transferring to Prolific Prep and playing a vital role in the squad’s Grand Session World Championship. In between these accolades, Green captured gold for the USA at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship, the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup (also being named tournament MVP) and the 2019 Under-19 Basketball World Cup. With partial Filipino lineage, Green has entertained playing for the Philippines internationally in the future. Green was also named a McDonald’s All-American.
As the first-ever member of G League Ignite, Green carved out impressive numbers, with 17.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 1.5 SPG, .365 on threes and .829 from the line. In a losing effort in the quarterfinal round, Green played his best game of the season with 30 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
Green’s incredible athleticism helps him on both ends of the floor and his ability to get to the rim is augmented by a strong outside game. In between, in the midrange, Green has an opportunity to become truly unstoppable if he can improve his efficiency there. Green’s playmaking is improving rapidly as well, indicating that he has the potential of becoming one of the top players in the NBA within his first few years.
