Future Watch: Justin Fields Finds a Home In Chicago Justin Fields could be the second best quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft. After some wheeling and dealing the Chicago Bears managed to draft this talented quarterback with the 11th overall pick. The Bears are hoping they’ve found themselves the arm that will lead them to a championship someday.
Nobody will know what made Fields’ stock drop in this draft. He had an amazing career at Ohio State University after transferring from the University of Georgia, where he spent his freshman season and played 12 games there as the backup.
In 2019, Fields led Ohio State to a Big Ten Championship with a 34-21 victory over Wisconsin and a berth in the College Football Playoff. Fields was the MVP of that game. He ended up finishing third in Heisman voting, and he was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and first-team, all-conference. In the 2019 Fiesta Bowl, he passed for 320 yards with a touchdown and two picks, and they lost the game.
In 2020, there was a lot of Heisman buzz over Fields, and he didn’t do much to ruin those chances. But COVID-19 did shorten the season, and he still led his team to another Big-Ten Championship and another bid to the College Football Playoff. In a 49-28 win over Clemson, while playing injured, Fields passed for 385 yards and six touchdowns. Fields and Ohio State did fall to Alabama 52-24. In a shortened 2021 season, Fields passed for 2,100 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions with 383 yards on the ground with five touchdowns.
Fields won the Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year in 2019 and 2020. In 2020, this future star won the Chicago Tribune Silver Football. Some big names have won that award, like current Giants running back, Saquon Barkley won it twice in 2016, in a tie with J.T. Barrett and 2017.
Fields threw for 70.2% of his passes. He can scramble out of the pocket, plus he ran a 4.44 in the 40-yard dash! Fields has a strong arm. One of the strongest in the draft, but that seems to have gotten lost since draft day. In his NCAA career, he threw for a tremendous 61.6% on plays five or more yards downfield. Sometimes this happens in various drafts in different sports, and many times the players prove the prognosticators and the teams wrong for passing on them.
