Future Watch: Martin Kaut Hockey Cards, Colorado Avalanche – Martin Kaut was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche with the 18th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. There was a time the Czech player was a draft riser, but the NHL Combine changed that.
One reason this right winger was highly touted was his great play in the 2017-18 World Junior Championship. In the first game of the tournament, he scored a goal and added a primary assist in a 2-1 overtime win against Switzerland, and was named the Player of the Game. Overall, Kaut , he scored two goals and five helpers in seven tournament games.
Kaut finished out the 2018 season playing in the Czech Elite League with HC Dynamo, getting nine goals and 16 points in 38 games, and five points in seven playoff games.
At the NHL Combine, Kaut was shocked to find out that he had a congenital heart problem. It wasn’t considered serious, and he left Buffalo and went back to the Czech Republic for the operation and rested for two months. Kaut returned to North America for the NHL Draft and was there to hear his name called.
In 2018-19, Kaut played in the AHL for the Colorado Eagles. Now healthy and cleared to play, he scored 12 goals with 14 assists in 63 games. He added two goals in four playoff games. During the season, Kaut played in his second World Junior Championship and scored four points in five games and was voted a Top Three Player on his team.
Kaut started the 2019-20 season with the Eagles again. By February, the Avs called him up and he played in nine games recording two goals and one assist. Kaut finished out the season in the AHL before the pandemic shut it down. He had 18 points in 34 games.
